The Morrígan is a genuine figure from real Irish mythological tradition, not a series invention — her core attributes (raven/crow shapeshifting, war and death associations, prophetic pronouncements, and shifting duality between beautiful woman and hag-like form) are all drawn directly from the medieval sources. The series' choice to make her Merona's divine mother, and mother with Crom Cruach to Armaeus, is original fictional genealogy layered onto the real mythological figure, not attested in any surviving myth.

The Morrígan is one of the most important and well-attested deities of the Irish Mythological and Ulster Cycles, appearing centrally in both Cath Maige Tuired and the Táin Bó Cúailnge — her closing prophecy after the Second Battle of Mag Tuired is one of the most frequently cited passages in medieval Irish literature, and she remains a foundational figure in modern scholarship and popular understanding of Irish myth alike.
