The Chronicle of Fredegar's continuations are the main source for the battle; modern historian Ian Wood (The Merovingian Kingdoms 450–751) treats Tertry as the decisive hinge of the whole Merovingian-to-Carolingian transition, a reading this dossier follows. King Theuderic III's presence at the battle was purely nominal — by this point the office of king had become entirely symbolic, and the real contest was between rival aristocratic power brokers rather than rival monarchs.

The Battle of Tertry (687 AD) is regarded by most modern historians as the true structural turning point of the Merovingian era — Pepin of Herstal's victory over the Neustrian mayor Berchar unified the office of mayor of the palace across the whole Frankish realm, after which no Merovingian king would ever again hold genuinely independent power, even though the dynasty would formally continue for another 64 years until 751.
