Theuderic III
Character
King of All the Franks (679–691 AD)

Historical Accuracy
The Chronicle of Fredegar's continuations are the main narrative source, and as with several later Merovingian kings, the sources give almost no personal detail about him as an individual — this dossier's own documentedHistory reflects that gap honestly rather than inventing characterization. Modern historian Ian Wood treats Tertry, which occurred during his reign, as the decisive structural turning point of the whole Merovingian-to-Carolingian transition.
Historical Significance
Sources:
- Chronicle of Fredegar continuations. Modern: Ian Wood — treats Tertry as the decisive structural turning point of the whole Merovingian-to-Carolingian transition.
Theuderic III's reign spans the single most important structural turning point of the Merovingian era — the 687 Battle of Tertry, after which Pepin of Herstal's mayoral power was effectively unified over the whole realm and no Merovingian king would hold genuinely independent authority again. His reign is significant chiefly as the hinge between the last vestiges of real Merovingian royal power and the fully mayor-dominated final century of the dynasty.
Historical Era
679–691 AD · King of Neustria and Burgundy, then All the Franks · Reign Marked by the Battle of Tertry
Not yet featured in the novels
Novel Relevance:
- Not yet directly dramatized in the manuscript chapters reviewed to date; his reign's real significance (Tertry) is the historical hinge into the fully mayor-dominated final century of the dynasty.
Timeline:
- c. 651 born; 670s holds Neustria/Burgundy amid instability; 679 becomes sole king after Dagobert II's death; 687 Battle of Tertry, Pepin of Herstal's mayoral power effectively unifies over the whole realm; 691 dies.
Witch's Rebirth Canon:
- Falls just after Book VI's 656–679 AD span closes, bridging toward the final Pippinid-mayor-dominated stretch of the series' history.
679–691 AD · King of Neustria and Burgundy, then All the Franks · Reign Marked by the Battle of Tertry
Birth:
- c. 651 AD.
Death:
- 691 AD.
Parents:
- Father: Clovis II (per most reconstructions).
Reign:
- Held Neustria and Burgundy at various points through the turbulent 660s–670s, becoming sole king of the Franks in 679 after Dagobert II's assassination left no rival Austrasian claimant.
The Battle of Tertry (687):
- The single most important event of his reign, and arguably the true turning point of the entire Merovingian era: Pepin of Herstal, mayor of Austrasia, decisively defeated the Neustrian mayor Berchar (acting in Theuderic III's name). After Tertry, the office of mayor of the palace was effectively unified under the Pippinids, and no Merovingian king would ever again hold genuinely independent power — Theuderic III continued to reign afterward, but purely as a figurehead controlled by Pepin of Herstal.
