Merona is an original fictional creation, not a historical figure. Her parentage and pre-cycle identity are deliberately built on real Irish mythological figures — the Morrígan, Manannán mac Lir, and the Otherworld queen Cliodhna — tying her fictional history to an existing mythological thread rather than inventing one from nothing, but the character herself, her specific journey, and the death/rebirth cycle are the author's own invention and should not be read as adapted from any single attested myth about Cliodhna.

Her narrative significance is foundational: she is the protagonist whose journey across all eight books, and whose death/rebirth cycle, structures the entire series.

Novel Canon Role: - Protagonist across the entire eight-book series. Book I: reborn in Gaul, raised by Mairead in Septimania, first confrontation with Armaeus in this era. Book II: retrieves the Cauldron of Dagda, learning her own divine lineage. Book III (Spear of Lugh): travels to Ireland's Brú na Bóinne to claim the Tuatha Dé Danann's power at the winter solstice, and summons her father Manannán mac Lir from the sea for the first time. Series Structure: - Books I–VII form a closed temporal loop: Book I opens in 1590 Copenhagen with her execution (an ending that is also the cycle's beginning); each subsequent book travels further back through the Merovingian era until Book VII shows the 751 AD deposition that causes the 1590 pyre. Book VIII (988 BC) sits outside the loop as her true origin story, when twelve-year-old Cliodhna first accepted her mother's covenant.

Half-sister, through her mother, to Armaeus (born of the Morrígan and Crom Cruach). - Known as Cliodhna in 988 BC (Book VIII, her origin story); as Merona from Book I onward. Carries the Living Library of Enoch in her own memory — every life she has lived is recorded within her. The Death/Rebirth Cycle: - Has died and been reborn countless times across history; each resurrection costs her something she cannot recover. The cycle was built by her own mother, the Morrígan, who 'had no other choice.' - Her identity as Merona begins with an infant delivered into Mairead's care at Septimania in 478 AD; her most recent mortal death before that opens Book I: burned at the stake as Anna Koldings in Copenhagen, 1590.
