Clovis I

The novels draw directly on Gregory of Tours' Historia Francorum, our principal source for Clovis's reign — his baptism at Reims by St. Remigius, his marriage to the Burgundian princess Clotilde, and his major battles are all historically attested, though Gregory wrote decades after Clovis's death and shaped his account to present him as a model Catholic king, so some details (such as the exact circumstances of his battlefield vow at Tolbiac) may be embellished or telescoped for effect. The series' supernatural framework — the Labyrinth, Merona's presence at his court, his walking her underground through Paris's catacombs — is an original fictional layer with no historical basis, deliberately built atop the well-documented historical Clovis rather than replacing him.
