Childeric I

Character

King of the Salian Franks (c. 458–481 AD)

Character

Historical Accuracy

Childeric's basic biography — his likely service as a Roman foederatus, his conflict and cooperation with the Roman general Aegidius, his battle near Orléans, and his burial at Tournai — is drawn from Gregory of Tours and the archaeological record of the 1653 tomb find, about as solid as evidence gets for a 5th-century Frankish king. Worth noting: most of the original tomb hoard was stolen from the Bibliothèque Nationale in 1831 and melted down, so much of what we know about the grave goods today comes from Jean-Jacques Chiflet's 1655 study and early drawings made before the theft, not the surviving objects themselves. The series' portrayal of him as Clovis's father is consistent with the record; any deeper personal characterization is the novels' own invention, since no narrative source describes his personality in detail.

Historical Significance

Sources: - Gregory of Tours; the tomb itself (1653); Chiflet's Anastasis Childerici (1655). Modern: Patrick Périn, Michel Kazanski.
Childeric I (d. 481/482 AD) is the earliest Frankish king for whom substantial physical evidence survives — his 1653 tomb discovery at Tournai, with its gold bee ornaments, signet ring, and weapons, remains one of the richest and most important early Frankish royal burials ever found, and it is our best direct evidence for the 'long-haired king' (reges criniti) convention this series draws on throughout. As the father of Clovis I, he stands at the literal origin point of the Merovingian dynasty and the historical world this series is built around.
